Basic Uk Bank Accounts and their benefits.

basic bank accountWhat are the benefits of having a basic UK bank account?

Even though you may have not wanted a bank account at this point in your life for whatever reason, a basic bank account may be something that you may be interested in once you understand what they offer.

All the basic features and functions are available with a basic bank account such as allowing you to have your wages, state benefits, pension and tax credits paid directly into your account. Although cheques can take a little while longer to clear, it will cost you nothing to pay them into a basic bank account so you may have to wait at least a few days for the money to be available in your account. You will also have the facility to withdraw cash machines by using a prepaid card – different banks will apply different restrictions and charges so you should check with your bank.

Because a wide variety of companies offer discounts if you pay your bills by direct debit, you can save money on things like and electricity by paying for them through your basic bank account. Some banks will even offer a facility to allow you to pay your bills by standing order.

How do I start an account? How much money will I need to start the account?

Although most banks don't expect any minimum deposit to open a basic account, some will ask you to deposit a nominal amount like one pound to get you started. In addition, they do not have any expectation of how much or how little you should pay into the account.

Will I have to pay for any of the basic bank account facilities?

As well as not being charged for opening a basic bank account, most banks will not charge you for making withdrawals from cash machines. You will have all the banks terms explained when you open the account but you should perhaps check anyway. Some cash machines, that are not generally owned by a bank or building society, may charge you to make withdrawals. If you do use one of these that charge, you should get an onscreen warning that informs you of the charge and give you the option to change your mind or continue with the transaction. Most of the banks will charge for certain services however. If they have to refuse, set up, cancel or alter direct debits or standing orders, they will often make a charge. Check whether the bank that you want to use charges for these services.

Can the banks refuse me a basic bank account?

Even though a bank may carry out a credit check on you to see if you have any entries for outstanding county court judgments or bankruptcy before offering an account, basic bank accounts should be available to almost everybody. Even though you may have such entries when they do a credit check, you may still be able to open a basic bank account. Even if you have been refused loans in the past, we can help you start to clear debt problems today!
